It's sick how whole slopes are completely cut down here, so that the soil is washed out by the rain because it's no longer held together by the roots. The road is buried in numerous places. You could at least leave every second tree standing when cutting down, but that's probably too complicated. It is partly reforested with small trees, but the intervention in the ecosystem is enormous and the same tree species is always planted. You will probably only notice and change it when everything is broken. "Two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, but I'm not quite sure about the universe yet." After the dive I knew why it was called with that name. It looked like the desert in texas. Probably in texas there were more fish. The first night on Rarotonga we still had jet lag and whiled away the sleepless time at night with some star trails on the beach next to the hotel. Rarotonga, Cook Islands — EXIF: Nikon D200; Δt=480 s; f=12 mm; f/5.0; ISO 200; 2010-07-06 16:26:10There is a reef around Rarotonga, about 100-200m out to sea and only 1.5-1m deep. This is where the waves break, which hit the island unhindered from all over the Pacific. Snorkeling that far out is unhealthy. You're either smashed against the reef or you can't make it back. A small independent group positioned elsewhere on the island, further inland on a hilltop next to the church, could still see the totality phase of the eclipse. Bad luck! Mangaia, Cook Islands — EXIF: Nikon D200; Δt=1/4 s; f=400 mm; f/5.6; ISO 100; 2010-07-11 20:32:49A little further out in the sea the sun was shining. You could have seen the darkness from there. Oh, if only that gap in the clouds had come a few minutes earlier. But I like this photo all the more. Otherwise photos of the partial phase of a solar eclipse look pretty boring. You can also do it in Photoshop. Here's another time-lapse movie of the whole eclipse. The pastor thanked us on behalf of all residents because without our appearance they would not have known that there would be a solar eclipse that day and what it was. Out of courtesy, I didn't take any photos during the fair. Was special. Rather militaristic.
